SKYSCRAPER

The United States has many of the world's most famous skyscrapers. After emerging in New York and Chicago in the 1870's and 1880's, skyscrapers were being built in cities all across the country by the early 1900's. Though they were initially greeted with a great deal of skepticism and even protest, by the 1920's they were essential elements to the identity and civic pride of the nation's growing cities. After WWII, skylines were transformed with successive waves of new buildings, culminating in a major boom in the 1980's. The pace has slowed in recent years, however, and today more skyscrapers are being constructed in Asia than America, including the world's tallest
